Mental Well-Being - by Dr Marissa Lobo

Are you anxious? Are you feeling low? Are you getting cyber bullied? Do you feel no one understands you? Are you fed up of life? Trust me! You are not alone! 10-20% of adolescents experience some kid of mental health condition at some point of their teen life, but most cases go undetected and untreated.

Worldwide, depression is one of the leading mental health conditions in adolescents. Suicide is the third major cause of death in adolescents between 15-19 years of age.

Emotional disorders, anxiety, depression, behavior disorders can affect a teen’s personal and academic life profoundly often leading to absenteeism and a drop in grades. Isolating yourself from family members can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, worthlessness and hopelessness.

Unfortunately, teens often feel no one understands them. The fear of being judged by others, lack of awareness and the stigma associated with mental health conditions stops people from seeking help when they need it.

While talking to a friend may help sort out some of your minor problems, sometimes it may be necessary to seek professional help. You may think seeking help from a Psychologist or Counselor means you are crazy and will be laughed at. Having a mental health condition does not mean you are ‘cracked or crazy’. You are not! You can be helped to get out of it. With a Therapist, you don’t have to worry about revealing who you really are or what you’re feeling or worry about sounding ‘dumb’ or ‘silly’. Therapists won’t judge you…and you can really talk about your innermost fears and conflicts without feeling ashamed or guilty. Believe me! They’ve heard it all!

If you want to be happy and healthy teens you need to stay emotionally and physically healthy. Your emotional well being is just as important as your physical health.
