Fame doesn’t bring immunity to mental health issues

Celebrities often have issues relating to social media, social appearance and being “in the

spotlight”, they feel stressed and anxious and actors/models are often under a lot of pressure

by society and their clients to “look thin” which can lead to eating disorders.

But first, let’s make sure we know what a “celebrity” is:

ce·leb·ri·ty

noun

1. a famous person.

By definition, a lot of people should know them in order to be famous and with such fame

comes the pressure to be accepted by everyone and be perceived as someone greater than

themselves, Let’s take a look at three celebrities that had or are having mental health issues.

1. Kanye West - Bipolar Disorder

Kanye West is an American rapper and fashion designer, among others and before his

planned “Saint Pablo Tour” he suffered psychosis and he had to cancel his tour and he

suffered an opioid addiction after going through plastic surgery. [1]

In 2018, his eighth album, ‘ye’ had a piece of text on the album cover: “I hate being Bi-Polar

its awesome”.

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder characterized by episodes of mania and depression. [2]

2. Princess Diana - Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder where the person binges (meaning, eats a large amount of food, often feeling out of control) and then purges (meaning, forcefully vomits) in order to prevent weight gain. [3]

While eating disorders are extremely serious, they’re often overlooked by the person

suffering and are usually in denial of their disorder [4], the same can be seen with the late

Princess Diana, she started to suffer from Bulimia in 1981 and it took her some time to seek

treatment.

After her treatment, she decided to stand as an example of eating disorders and spreading

awareness with the same.

3. Dwayne Johnson - Depression

No matter how strong someone looks from the outside, a totally different story can be seen

inside, and this is particularly true with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, when he was just a

youngster, he and his family got evicted from their apartment, he had very few friends due to

him moving a lot, he also had many injuries that halted his American Football career and last

but not least, he had to deal with a breakup with his girlfriend.

All of this cultivated into depression which he kept inside of him for a long time “Depression

never discriminates”, “took me a long time to realize it but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone” he said to his fans.

Depression is a mental disorder characterized with a loss of motivation in previously loved

activities, constant depressed mood, increased or decreased need for sleep and/or food. [5]

Having good mental health is key to the healthy development and well-being of every child. Children need good mental health - not only to be able to deal with challenges and adapt to change, but so they can feel good about themselves, build healthy relationships with others and enjoy life.

It is said that you must treat your body like a temple and the greatest of pillars have the strongest of bases. If your body is that pillar then your mind is that base. The discourse around mental health in school has exponentially increased and the Health and Mind Club has played a massive role in making that happen. It gives me immense pleasure to be leading the club and encouraging our members to use the club as a catalyst for the mental well being of the school. We strive to stamp out the stigma and provide an all inviting, all accepting platform.

Ask us anything :)

Thanks! We will get back to you very shortly

Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It's about how you drive, not where you're going."
Mental health is equally important as physical health. It includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, which affects our day to day life.
The aim of the Health & Mind Club is to  ensure that we students have a healthy and positive mindset.
